Advanced Stone Setting Weekend - Spring

6th & 7th May 2017
Saturday & Sunday 10am - 6pm
Tutor: Scott McIntyre

The course will be led by Scott McIntyre, Scott has over 21 years of experience in the trade, working in a variety of workshops in Glasgow and Edinburgh. In his career, he has picked up an extensive skill-set from these various places and worked tirelessly to ensure he’s at the very top of his game where he has received a high level of intense training. He now works as head Goldsmith in the incredible Brazen Studios.

Price of the class includes all materials, tools, stones and lunch per day.

This advanced stone setting course is for people wanting to enhance their skills in jewellery making. Each day will be broken into two halves where you will learn a stone setting technique in each.

Day 1:

Part 1: Claw setting - In this session you will be shown how to make a claw setting from scratch, seat and then set the stone. Then you will learn how to repair a claw setting by removing the stone, cutting a claw, re-tipping your claw and re-setting your stone.

Part 2: Secret setting (flush setting). This part of the class you will be working with smaller stones and will be learning how to set them flush into a sheet of metal. Scott will be showing you how to make your own burnishers for the job, and will be imparting a few tricks of the trade along the way.

Day 2:

Part 1: Pave setting (single) - You will be shown how to pave set a single round stone into a flat sheet of metal.

Part 2: Pave setting (multiple) - In this next stage you will be shown how to pave set multiple stones in line into a flat sheet of metal.

From attending both days consecutively or one of the days, you will come away with a good understanding of more advanced stone setting that will lead to development of your designs and technical ability. The class is limited to 6 students per class to ensure key techniques are covered and to give maximum one-to-one tuition. You will be shown all the necessary techniques to harness the techniques, however please be aware that a certain amount of continual practice will be required post the advanced stone setting class to hone the skills.

Vanilla Ink Studios promotes and supports the jewellery sector in Scotland and are keen to up-skill and share knowledge.
