The basic stone setting course is for jewellers wanting to enhance their skills in setting starting with the simplest of settings. Each day you will learn how to do each setting in depth, however practice does make perfect.
Day 1: Bezel Setting
During this class you will learn to set a round stone within a tube bezel, learn to build a tube bezel and learn to build a bezel setting with a bearer wire.
Day 2: Claw Setting
You will learn to build and set a double gallery, 4 claw setting for both a round and square stone. You will also be shown how to remove the stone and re-tip a claw.
From attending both days consecutively or one of the days, you will come away with a good understanding of basic stone setting that will lead to development of your designs and technical ability. The class is limited to 6 students per class to ensure key techniques are covered and to give maximum one-to-one tuition. You will be shown all the necessary techniques to harness the techniques, however please be aware that a certain amount of continual practice will be required post class to hone the skills. Practice makes perfect!
Vanilla Ink Studios promotes and supports the jewellery sector in Scotland and are keen to up-skill and share knowledge.
Vanilla Ink will be providing lunch each day along with all the necessary materials and tools needed. You will each have your own bench where we do have access to hand tools but do feel free to bring your own, a list will be given a few days before the class.
Please note that you need to have a good understanding of jewellery making (soldering and saw piercing is essential) and good eyesight in order to take this course, this is for people with basic knowledge of stone setting skills. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.
