Box Catch Making Weekend

Box Catch Making Weekend

Weekend Course
14th & 15th April
Tutor: Scott McIntyre

The course will be led by Master Goldsmith, Scott McIntyre. With nearly 23 years of experience in the jewellery trade, Scott has created amazing pieces for a wide and varied number of workshops across Glasgow and Edinburgh. A passion for the passing on of skills and heritage is deep-rooted within Scott’s working ethos. He intends to use the methods he has honed over time to ensure that each student leaves his department with a far greater knowledge of jewellery making. He is the Director of the Vanilla Ink Jewellery School and Head Goldsmith.

The Make a Box Catch course is for jewellers looking to take their bench skills to another level, moving on to more complex techniques. On both days there will be an in-depth and thorough look at the intricacies and fine detail required to create such an advanced piece . Extensive tutorials will give you an opportunity to watch a true master at work, before you turn your own hands to your new-found skills. Plenty of time and guidance is on hand, however further practice in your own surroundings is most definitely recommended.

Day 1

  • Study a previously made box catch and understand the engineering behind it
  • A group discussion to learn the mechanics and different methods
  • Tutorials and in-depth analysis of techniques
  • Start to build your own box catch using silver in your chosen method

Day 2

  • Continue and finish your box catch
  • Figure of eight tutorial
  • Finishing the catch and hopefully…. CLICK

From attending both days consecutively, you will come away with a fantastic understanding of making a box catch that will lead to the further development of your designs and technical ability. The class is limited to 8 students per class to ensure key concepts are covered and to give maximum one-to-one tuition. You will be shown all the necessary methods to harness the techniques, however please be aware that a certain amount of continual repetition will be required post class to hone the skills. Practice makes perfect!

Vanilla Ink Studios promotes and supports the jewellery sector in Scotland, with the core aim to educate, inspire and empower the industry.

We will provide all the necessary materials and tools needed. You will each have your own bench where we have access to all hand tools, but do feel free to bring your own if you are more comfortable.

Please note that you need to have an EXCELLENT UNDERSTANDING of jewellery making. A knowledge of SKILLED jewellery techniques is required. Skills such as SOLDERING, FILING, SCORING & FOLDING AND SAW PIERCING ARE ESSENTIAL. Prior experience with SCORPERS/GRAVERS is handy but not a dealbreaker. Good eyesight is required in order to complete this course, please ensure you bring your own glasses or optivisors. We reserve the right to check if you have the necessary skills or refuse attendance on this course. While this may seem harsh, experience tells us that under-qualified students can be quickly left behind and affect those at a suitable level. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to ask.

**please note classes may be cancelled due to lack of attendees. In the unlikely event, you will be fully refunded and notified the day before the class is scheduled. If you can not attend the class but someone you know can take your place then please let us know ahead of the class, we can only refund the class if there is at least 3 days notice**
